Shopify Agentic Storefronts: what it is, and how to turn it off

The short answer first: where the setting lives, what it does, and the one part of it you cannot switch off. Then, further down, what's actually going on with your product data.

Check any Shopify store — free, no install

Reads the store’s public product feed and runs 15 of our 19 checks — no login, no install, nothing in the store is changed. Four checks need access to the store and are marked as not run rather than counted against you.

How to turn off Agentic Storefronts

Where the setting lives

Sales channels → Agentic

In the left-hand navigation of your Shopify admin — not under Settings. The page opens on a toggle labelled "Allow Shopify to manage for me," which is on by default.

  1. Go to Sales channels → Agentic in your admin.
  2. Turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me." While it's on, Shopify automatically enrols your store in new AI channels as they launch, and manages catalog access and checkout settings for you.
  3. With it off, you get per-channel controls — for AI platforms Shopify lists there (ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and others), you can individually turn off Catalog access and Direct checkout, or set a channel to neither.

What this does not do: turning off "Allow Shopify to manage for me" and disabling every channel you can see does not remove your products from Shopify Catalog itself, and it does not stop the Shop app — Shopify's own agentic channel — from listing your products. Multiple merchants report this directly in Shopify's community forum, and a Shopify staff reply in that same thread confirms there is no setting that fully removes a store from Shop's agentic listing. There is currently no documented single switch that opts a store out of AI product discovery entirely.

If you specifically want a product invisible everywhere — Shop app included — the only documented lever is to set that product's status to Unlisted, or apply the seo.hidden metafield to it. Both of those also remove the product from Google organic search, which is a real trade-off and probably not what most merchants asking this question actually want. There is no admin toggle we found that hides a product from AI agents while keeping it visible to Google.

Confidence on the above: the admin path and the "Allow Shopify to manage for me" toggle name are confirmed both by Shopify's own help documentation and by a merchant screenshot from a live account. The per-channel Catalog access / Direct checkout controls and the "no full opt-out" limitation are corroborated across Shopify's help center and an active Shopify Community thread, including a reply from Shopify staff, but Shopify's UI changes without notice and we have not personally clicked through every one of those individual toggles on a live store since. If your screen doesn't match this exactly, trust your admin over this page and treat this as a strong starting point rather than a guarantee.

What Agentic Storefronts and Shopify Catalog actually are

Shopify Catalog is Shopify's term for a structured feed of your product data — title, description, options, images, price and availability — built so that AI shopping assistants can read it programmatically instead of crawling your storefront pages like a search engine would.

Agentic Storefronts is the umbrella Shopify uses for the channels that read from that feed: AI assistants like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, plus Shopify's own Shop app, that can recommend or in some cases directly check out your products when a shopper asks a question like "find me a waterproof jacket under $150." Shopify turned this on for merchants by default, which is the reason this page exists — most people looking for the toggle did not ask for the feature in the first place.

What you give up by turning it off

If AI assistants are a source of buying traffic in your category — and Shopify's own data plus outside reporting on ChatGPT shopping suggest this is a real and growing channel, not a hypothetical one — turning off catalog access to a given AI platform means your products stop being eligible for that assistant to recommend, full stop, for as long as the toggle is off. There's no partial state: Shopify's own documentation notes it can take up to a week for a product to fully stop being shared after you disable access, so the change isn't even immediate in either direction.

Some merchants want that trade-off — distrust of how their product data is used, or a policy decision to keep sales inside channels they control. That's a legitimate choice and the steps above are how you make it. Just go in knowing it's a real channel you're closing, not a cosmetic setting.

If you're leaving it on: the part that actually depends on you

If you leave Agentic Storefronts on, whether your products actually get recommended isn't Shopify's decision to make on your behalf — it depends on whether your product records have enough in them for an assistant to match a shopper's question. A product with no description, no category, no meaningful options, or no usable price is functionally invisible to a matching system even though it's technically "in" the feed. We wrote a separate page walking through exactly which fields matter and why: why ChatGPT can't see your products.

If you'd rather not audit your catalog by hand, that's what we built AI Catalog Readiness for — it scores your catalog against the fields that matter and ranks what to fix first. It's read-only, it diagnoses, and it does not control or guarantee placement in any AI assistant — see our terms of service for exactly what it does and doesn't promise.
